Bookmarks, Business Cards, Etc.

Hey, blogger friends!

I just have to tell you about a friend of mine, Delia Latham, who designs bookmarks, business cards, etc. She does an awesome job and is a dream to work with. So, if you're in need of any of the aforementioned items, be sure and let her know. She'll design up something special -- just for you! Here's the 411...

About Those Bookmarks...and Such

Someone e-mailed me recently, surprised to have discovered that I design bookmarks (and other marketing products), mostly for authors. I laughed and told her I thought all my “buds” knew that I do this thing.

Why should I have assumed that? I know better than to assume anything.

I’m an author of inspirational romance. I love to write. It’s a creative thing, I guess, because I also love graphic design. Not that I have any kind of degree in graphic design, other than one earned by trial-and-error and a few gray hairs. LOL

Here’s what happened:

Several years ago, I held my first published book in my hands, and it was beautiful. I needed matching bookmarks, but I’d already been shopping online, and I knew I couldn’t afford them. So I did what I always do when I need something I can’t afford—I set out to find a way to get them anyway.

First I figured out how to design bookmarks in my desktop publishing program. Then I attempted printing them out on my printer, laminating them, and trimming the laminate to size. It worked. But…what a lot of work, for a product that still looked hand made (read that “unprofessional”). Besides, I went through a boggling amount of printer ink (Ouch! That’s costly!), laminate film and card stock, to say nothing of the time investment.

It wasn’t what I wanted, so I went back to the drawing board.

More online research into printers, and finally I found one that didn’t break the bank. In fact, if I designed my bookmark and uploaded it to them, the bookmarks would cost me about four cents apiece, even including the shipping price. No way could I make them myself that cheaply! So I ordered some, and they looked terrific.

In the process, I found that I loved designing bookmarks! I designed a couple, just because, for friends who had new books. They told their friends, and those friends told theirs. Before I knew it, I had a little side thing going, designing bookmarks. That’s been about six years ago. It has expanded into business cards, postcards, flyers, and posters. Then I added press release writing and copyediting. Why not? :)

Creativity fulfills me. I can’t write all the time. But I love being around the writing community, so designing marketing products for other authors is a perfect hobby for me. Eventually I sent enough business to my printer that they offered me a tremendous discount, which I extend to my customers in its entirety. I love doing that—it’s my way of contributing to the literary cause, I guess.

Come on over. (http://deliadesigns.webs.com/) Check out what I do, and see what I can do for you!
